Your Guide to Botox for Migraines and Masseter Muscles

Botox, a neuromodulator, is known worldwide for its cosmetic benefits. However, did you know that Botox also has therapeutic benefits? This treatment is becoming a popular option at our Toronto clinic for all genders, particularly in treating migraines and masseter muscle issues.

At MD Skin Lab, our experienced physician injectors, Dr. Soreya Dhanji and Dr. Vishaal Govan, understand the importance of treating migraines and masseter muscles, as these are growing issues for many individuals. The neuromodulator Botox is an excellent and effective solution to alleviate these conditions. This blog will shed light on Botox's efficacy, procedure, and considerations. Let's get into it!

Understanding Migraines and Masseter Muscle Issues

Migraines are intense, straining headaches often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. They can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. On the other hand, the masseter muscle, located in the jaw, plays a crucial role in chewing. Problems with this muscle can lead to temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) and bruxism (teeth grinding) and can contribute to headaches and facial pain.

Botox has become a popular approach to alleviating these conditions at our downtown Toronto clinic.

How Does Botox from Migraines Work?

Neuromodulators like Botox are FDA—and Health-Canada-approved for migraines. They work by blocking neurotransmitters that carry pain signals from the brain, thus preventing migraine headaches. The treatment involves multiple injections around the head and neck every 12 weeks. Our patients at MD Skin Lab often report significant relief, experiencing fewer and less severe migraine days.

At our downtown Toronto clinic, the procedure typically takes about 15-20 minutes. Our physician injector will safely administer Botox to specific points along the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck, and shoulders; our process is tailored to your case. The procedure is relatively quick and does not require anesthesia as it is non-invasive.

When Can I Expect Results?

Botox can reduce the number of migraine days by 50% or more for many patients. However, the results vary based on the individual, as migraines are multi-factorial. It can take two to three treatments (12 weeks apart) to experience significant benefits. Some patients at our Toronto clinic report relief as soon as the first week after treatment, while others may take longer.

Understanding Botox for Masseter Muscle Reduction

Botox injections can also be used to treat issues related to the masseter muscle. When injected into the masseter, Botox helps to relax the muscle, reducing its size and the force of contraction. This treatment can alleviate jaw pain and headaches and can also result in a cosmetic benefit by slimming the jawline.

Similar to migraine treatment, Botox injections for masseter muscle issues are quick and minimally invasive. Our physician targets the masseter muscle at specific points, and the number of injections depends on the muscle size and the desired outcome.

When Can I Expect Results?

Results can be seen within 1-2 weeks, with the peak effect occurring around one month after treatment. The benefits can last between 3 to 6 months. Our physician injectors recommend regular treatments for sustained results, especially for therapeutic purposes.

Are There Any Side Effects or Post-Treatment Tips I Should Be Aware Of?

Botox injections are a safe procedure. Our exceptional physician injectors are experienced and always assist patients with tailored solutions at our Toronto medical spa. That said, the physicians will provide you with thorough directions on how to look after your treated area, as well as schedule a follow-up with first-time patients to ensure optimal results.

Post-treatment, we do recommend the following:

    • Stay upright for four hours
    • Avoid applying pressure on the treatment area
    • Avoid wearing hats for 24 hours
    • No blood thinners for 24 hours, including alcohol, anti-inflammatory medications, omega-3, etc.
    • Avoid working out, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms for 24 hours.
